Benin Republic Court Sentences Four Nigerians Arrested For Illegal Entry To 3 Months In Prison With Option Of N3 Million Fine
Nigerian Nationals Released After Paying Fine for Illegal Migration in Benin Republic
Four Nigerian nationals, who were recently arrested in Benin Republic for illegal migration, have been ordered to pay a fine of N3 million by a local court. The men had been reported missing by their families after they lost contact following a business trip to the country.
According to family sources, the four individuals arrived in Benin Republic on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, and checked into the F&F Hotel in the Savalou region. However, the following day, their families were unable to reach them. Eventually, the men's wives managed to confirm that they had been detained by local authorities.
The Benin Republic government charged the men with entering the country illegally and they were arraigned in court on October 31, 2024. The court proceedings revealed that they had not been represented by legal counsel at the time of their arraignment, which led to their denial of bail.
After several weeks, the Nigerian nationals were released on Wednesday, November 13, 2024, after paying the prescribed fine. The court convicted them for illegal migration, offering a choice between a three-month prison sentence or the payment of a fine. The family confirmed that they opted to pay N3 million, which resulted in their release.
One family member expressed relief, stating, “My brothers and their friends have been released after paying the fine. Those who could not afford the payment would have faced a three-month jail sentence.”
