Former Niger President Laments Hardship as Tensions Rise Following Ouster

Former President of Niger Republic, Mohamed Bazoum, has expressed his distress over the dire conditions he is facing, including being isolated and forced to consume dry rice. This follows his ousting from power on July 26, 2023, when the military took control and suspended the constitution.

President Bola Tinubu, who serves as the Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), had called for a meeting on Thursday following the expiration of a 7-day ultimatum issued by the regional bloc for the reinstatement of President Bazoum.

In messages conveyed to a friend via text, Bazoum revealed that he has been enduring complete isolation since Friday, without any human contact, food, or medicine being provided to him. He disclosed that he has been without electricity for a week, a situation that has affected all Nigeriens due to Nigeria cutting off power in response to the coup.

Regrettably, the perishable food he was initially given has spoiled, leaving him with no choice but to consume dry pasta and rice. Despite these challenges, Bazoum has managed to establish communication with the outside world.

Although he was unable to speak with acting US Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland during her visit to the capital city of Niamey on Monday, Bazoum did manage to have a phone conversation with Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

In a noteworthy development, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi, the 14th Emir of Kano, engaged with the coup leaders in an attempt to initiate negotiations. While Sanusi undertook this effort in a personal capacity, he informed President Bola Tinubu prior to his trip.

ECOWAS has scheduled another meeting in Abuja on Thursday to address the ongoing coup situation and its implications. The international community continues to closely monitor the events in Niger Republic.
