Thousands Flee as Alau Dam Collapse Causes Severe Flooding in Maiduguri

Image
Thousands of Maiduguri residents have been forced to flee their homes following a massive flood triggered by the collapse of the Alau Dam. The dam, which had been at full capacity for several days, gave way in the early hours of Tuesday, causing severe flooding in various parts of the Borno State capital, including the government house and the Emir’s palace. The flood also resulted in the escape of wild animals from the state zoo, with snakes, crocodiles, and ostriches roaming the streets. The hardest-hit areas include Fori, Galtimari, Gwange, and Bulabulin, where homes were swept away, turning streets into rivers. Videos circulating on social media show the devastation, as residents, overwhelmed by rising waters, abandoned their homes and sought refuge on higher ground. This disaster follows the Nigerian military’s evacuation of residents from the Alau community in Konduga Local Government Area just days earlier, after the dam began to overflow. Personnel had moved residen

Join us on October 1 for the #FearlessInOctober #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria2.0 protest as we fight for a better future and an end to oppressive governance." A devastating flood in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, led to the escape of over 200 inmates, including several Boko Haram commanders, after part of the prison wall collapsed. An official from the Nigerian Correctional Center, speaking anonymously, confirmed that the flood, caused by heavy rainfall, breached the perimeter of the Maiduguri New Prison on Tuesday. The flood not only allowed the inmates to escape but also left a portion of the facility damaged. “The rain was intense, causing severe flooding that damaged our prison’s wall. Among the escapees were some Boko Haram commanders along with over 200 other inmates,” the source explained. The official added that another 200 inmates were safely relocated to a different facility to prevent further escapes. This incident follows recent claims by the Borno State government that measures were in place to prevent flood disasters. However, the Tuesday flood wreaked havoc on the city and its surrounding areas, leaving man

They have also stated that if any protester is harmed, they will not relent until President Tinubu and his cabinet resign.
